Non-Traditional Beauty Rocks (a.k.a. how Amber Rose just proved she's not a feminist)

You guys know I don't typically talk a lot about celebrities here, however, this one deserved a mention for so many reasons.

In a recent interview with former rapper N.O.R.E. on Revolt's "Drink Champs", supposed feminist Amber Rose, (I guess in probable a bid to attempt to remain relevant in a world that often forgets she exists), proceeded to tell an entire room of what appears to be sloshy drunk men that she grew up in a city where people "aren’t traditionally attractive ."

I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, trying to see if I may have read the quote wrong or if someone was trying to sensationalize it to say something she didn't mean. So I listened to the interview (as much of it as I could anyway before becoming grossed out) and, yes, she did say what she said (insert face-palm here).

I was going to include the video here in the post, but due to it's overwhelming sleaziness, I deemed it unfit for permanent placement here in our little happy place.

According to Philly.com, Rose said
“I don’t know how I can say this without sounding [expletive] up, but a lot of the people where I’m from aren’t traditionally attractive people...For me, being blessed with beauty, as beautiful women know, is a blessing and a curse. To grow up in such an area and be blessed with beauty, it was very difficult for me.”

First and foremost, HUH? Really, Amber? As a fellow Philadelphian, I would be insulted if her words really mattered. In truth, the only reason why I am even tapping away at my laptop keys about her is that she is supposed to be a feminist. Now, whatever you think about feminism, one thing we can all agree upon is that feminism is supposed to uplift women, bring women together, encourage and empower women.

Comments like this are so incredibly offensive to the movement, its laughable. How dare she even claim to be a "liberated feminist" and in the same breath call any group of women unattractive, (especially those from her own home city). To be honest, there aren't too many things more anti-feminist than that. It makes us need to take a second look at that whole Slut Walk as nothing but nude promoted publicity stunt.

Secondly, oh poor you, Amber Rose. Poor you to be "blessed with beauty" that you have to attack the demographic that probably wasn't the one making you feel this way: women. I can see how if guys were constantly berating you while you walked down the street or home or to work, how that might be the reason being "blessed with beauty" might feel like a curse (after all, who wants to be verbally berated while they go grocery shopping or run to the post office?)

However, turning what would be a valid and worthy discussion of rape culture and misogyny to a commentary on the appearances of an entire neighborhood of women instantly devalues not only Amber's current opinions but the overall her previous attempts of looking like a feminist in general.

Let's go a little deeper: why attack "non traditionally beauty" standards? And then in the same interview discuss that not wearing a wig made her a non traditional beauty?

There is just so much hypocrisy, it could makes my head spin.

Furthermore, these comments reveal a deeper issue with Amber that should be addressed. Saying things like this only point out how little she actually thinks of herself. Think about it: this rhetoric is easily low self confidence masking itself as confidence. Because when you actually have confidence, when you actually do think highly of yourself, you do not need to belittle the beauty of anyone. In fact, you do the exact opposite. You point out the beauty in others. You embolden others. You complement others, not compete with others.

I am not here to pull out old photos of Amber to challenge the above commentary, nor am I here to put her down with nasty names. She is a shrewd business woman who used what she has to get what she supposedly wanted.

But I am here to point out that this is only a sad example of a sad woman who, despite daily commentary on her appearances, has little to offer beyond that. There is no longer any reason to take her seriously (if you ever did).

And if you ever did believe her half hearted, fully nude exploits were reason to shape you mouth to call her a feminist, here is a blatant, recent, tangible reason to never do that again.
