Oh, UH-UH DEPARTMENT: Kat Von D's Cotton Field post and the dragging that is deserved

I don't know what the fascination with slavery is for some people. I don't get the horrible "jokes", why referencing it is funny or clever, but I think they really ought to check themselves on it. At least to make sure that it doesn't make its way to their professional or business pages on social media.

Case and point, the debacle that occurred this week on Kat Von D's beauty brand's page. For those who are unfamiliar with Kat Von D, she is a tattoo artist known for her role in the reality tv show, Miami Ink. She has also dated a slew of other reality stars and musicians and created a beauty line, Kat Von D Beauty, which is sold at Sephora and online.

What you see is a screen grab from the now deleted post shared on Kat Von D Beauty. It is of KVD's new "Lock It" concealer in front of what appears to be a cotton field with the caption "Let Lock-it Concealer do all of the hard work for you..." featuring the brown skin muscle arm emoji.

Where to begin with this BS?

I guess with the low hanging fruit: The caption and the cotton field are damning enough without having to delve too deep. It's a cotton field. And the caption is says "doing all the work for you." with a brown skin emoji. For a very pale tone of concealer. It's so blatantly problematic.

I guess I would be more inclined to give the benefit of the doubt if Katherine Von Drachenberg herself did not have a racist laden past. And it is LADEN.

  • She has been accused of being anti-Semitic following a letter in her handwriting written to her former boss after she was fired including a burning Star of David. Her exes Oliver Peck, Steve-O, and others accuse her of constantly lying, particularly about the aforementioned anti-Semitic letter.
  • Her former fiance, Jesse James apparently used the N-Word frequently and was accused of being a Nazi (he is actually pictured in a Nazi hat doing a "hail" salute with one hand while making a Hitler mustache with the other). And to be honest, you really cannot be with someone with such hate-filled views if you yourself are "the bastion" of inclusively. Just saying...
  • The recent feud with Kat and her former friend, Jeffree Star, who has also been accused of racism, has kicked up more racism dust around her with stories and incidents too numerous to account here Starting to see a pattern yet?
  • She's been called out on social media numerous times because her own team severely lacks diversity. (which doesn't surprise me considering the whole cotton field post). Let's just face it, anyone of color or good common sense would have looked at that post and said OH, UH-UH!, that is if you had that type of diversity in your own team.

So, it does not surprise me that this photo with cotton fields and brown arm emojis came to be posted on KVDBeauty. Seems pretty on brand of Kat to be honest. No, this was not on Kat Von D's personal Instagram page, it was actually originally from a fan account (that also deleted it) that KVDBeauty reshared (which as a fellow social media manager, I also have a huge problem with.) But again, very on brand and very much not ok.

As with the anti-Semitic letter (for the first 8 months surrounding that issue at least) neither Kat nor her team is commenting on this post, whether to deny the implicit racism within the post or to at least lie and say they were hacked (Neither I nor The Reclaimed Blog endorses lying, but you guys gotta admit brands do it every day to save face and eliminate further dragging.) If you and your brand didn't want that kind of smoke, wouldn't you immediately, like last week, release some form of statement condemning racism and hatred of any kind.

Unless that is who you are and you just don't give a damn...

The long and short of it is this: Kat has been racist, y'all. People have been trying to tell y'all from jump. Maya Angelou said it best; "When someone shows you who they are, believe them." Kat is more concerned with being vegan and fighting against cruelty to animals that caring about the culture she and others in the public eye are creating around people of color.

And this post is enough for me to make me believe that Kat is racist and until repentant from her racist, bigoted ways, is hereby canceled by the Oh Uh-Uh Department.
