Here's the deal with DevaCurl...

DevaCurl used to be the number one product recommended for curly girls. Now, squads of people are alleging that DevaCurl is destroying their hair.

Over the past few months, a small but outspoken group of influencers, primarily on YouTube, started alleging that DevaCurl, once the top tier level of curl friendly products, was damaging their hair. These influencers alleged that DevaCurl caused dandruff, frizz, and even full changes to their curl patterns.

One of the most vocal influencers is Ayesha Malik, a curly hair YouTuber with 197,000 subscribers. Ayesha, who made a video at the end of January, alleged that her hair became seriously damaged after years of exclusively using DevaCurl products, which she’d previously often recommended on her channel, and sometimes in paid partnerships.

“I am suffering from severe hair and scalp issues,” says Ayesha in her video description. “I used to recommend DevaCurl, but not anymore.” Her video has garnered over 1 million views at this point.

Another persistent voice is hairstylist Stephanie Mero, who goes by the name CurlNinja. Stephanie used to highly recommend DevaCurl products, using them on her own hair.

That changed over the summer last year when she noted a change in the texture and health of her clients' hair as well as her own. After further research, Stephanie too alleged that DevaCurl harmed both hers and her clients' hair.  Stephanie has since made at least 13 videos criticizing the DevaCurl products and showing what she says is damage caused by them. She’s also encouraged her viewers to file complaints with the FDA if they feel their hair has been damaged by the product. In addition, Stephanie created a Facebook group for people whose hair has been damaged by DevaCurl products which exploded to over 14 Thousand people in mere days.

Meanwhile, DevaCurl’s comments on Instagram and Twitter are filled of angry people saying they also experienced hair damage. A four-year-old DevaCurl thread on Sephora’s community forum has begun to fill with new responses from people alleging these products caused breakage and hair loss. In early January of 2020, a law firm also posted an advertisement soliciting participants for a "DevaCurl hair loss class action investigation."
DevaCurl has since responded twice:

"Over two decades ago, DevaCurl was born from conversations with our consumers and from our salons and stylists about what they wanted and needed to embrace their curls. As a result, our community has grown to include millions of Devas around the world who use our products every day. All of our formulas are subject to rigorous and thorough testing to ensure our products meet strict internal quality assurance standards and regulatory requirements before they reach the market. We don’t speculate on why some people are attributing the challenges with their curls to our products. As part of our ongoing commitment to product safety and the satisfaction of our Deva Community, we are conducting additional testing with an independent party. We are committed to providing our customers with all the information they need to continue to use DevaCurl with confidence. We’ll be posting updates on our website, and we encourage our consumers to share their experiences with us at customercare@devacurl.com. We will go above and beyond to help anyone on their curl journey."

On their site, DevaCurl also issued a similar statement that claimed that an "independent third-party toxicologist" had done testing on their formulas and had not found any "safety issues."

"Because some of our community have recently asked more questions about some of our products we have conducted additional testing at the manufacturer and warehouse level. In addition, we worked with an independent third-party toxicologist to verify the safety of these formulas. All these tests verified there are no safety issues with our products."

So those are the facts. Here is my opinion: Until the DevaCurl situation is worked out, I would not recommend using these products. It's heartbreaking to see posts like these:
It's really heartbreaking so many folks are experiencing these results. I will keep you updated as these developments unfold. Stay tuned.

  1. Great post. It is crazy to see this and wonder what the company is going to do in regards to changing the ingredients or go out of business.
